Julia Cameron Changed my Life
And FREE tickets for you to join a live interview with her on 6th September.
Just a note: Write as You Are has not become a weekly newsletter, but this chance to share free tickets to my lovely readers was too important to miss!
It is not overstating things to say Julia Cameron changed my life. I have no doubt about it. She is like a huge-hearted writing fairy, sprinkling some kind of magic dust that brings withered artists back to life.
I first came across her book, The Artist’s Way in around 2007, and I did six of the twelve week’s of the ‘course’ in 2012. But it wasn’t until 2020 when I was deeply burnt out from freelance travel writing and had lost all the spark that had drawn me to writing in the first place, that her book became vital to me. I dedicated myself to the weekly exercises with every ounce of myself, Cameron’s words each week like a balm on my wounded and despondent writer’s heart. Her deep empathy, understanding, incredible insights and strong kicks up the bum, made me get really honest and helped guide me back home to truest self. By the 10th week of the 12-week course I had started writing a new novel and I had rediscovered a life dedicated to creativity for creativity’s sake.
Cameron brings us back to the spark, the childlikeness, the joy, the fun. I felt brave again, I felt inspired, I felt deeply connected.
(I am just about to get a top up as I delve into another of Cameron’s books called The Vein of Gold, lovingly gifted to me by a friend).
A few months after I finished The Artist’s Way, when I was deep into writing my novel, I found another thing that would change my life, The London Writers’ Salon (LWS). This online writing community was something I was searching for but didn’t think existed. I now write online daily with hundreds of other writers, alone but together.

Thanks Susannah, I will try to make it!
Susannah, thank you so much for getting the discount for the interview with Julia Cameron. I think she is amazing. But also thank you for your post. It has encouraged me to refind my copy of The Vein of Gold. Mine was also a gift from a friend many years ago. I realised when I got it from the bookshelf that I had only got about 40 odd pages into it and it looked pristine.
I now remember thinking I should keep it looking nice so I could "pass it on". Well I have now decided I am going to annotate it and make it truly mine. I am hoping this will encourage me to keep going all the way through with it.
And already I want to say how excited i am with it so huge thank you X
