Susannah! I enjoy all your letters, but this one is amongst my favourite, not just because it resonates, but also because you address the issue of storytelling advice shared through the "white person" (I'm struggling to find the right way to describe this) lens, one lens of many rather than the be-all and end-all. It was also lovely to hear you read the letter aloud!
Hi Rosemary, yes it is something I have thought about for a long time (probably since first studying religious studies back in the early 2000s). There is also the patriarchal lens that says stories about women have less value etc. I could have delved deeper and maybe I will in a following newsletter but the point I really wanted to get across is what you said- it is but one lens in which to see stories and if you feel locked out it is not because you can't write or your way is wrong, it is just because the lens is too narrow. I am glad you enjoyed me reading the newsletter. I am experimenting :)
Really enjoyed reading/listening to this post! Really resonated when you said your Kindle was a graveyard for 99p books... I totally fall into that trap when procrastinating during writing lulls. ❤️

I am so glad you enjoyed it Lucy! And yes it is such an easy trap to fall into hey? It is just so tempting! :)
love the optional audio file! I hope you keep that up for future newsletters. Thanks for another great newsletter—so helpful.
Thank you, Laurie! I am so glad you liked the audio, I will definitely try to do it for others (background noise permitting ;)
